JM Baby & Kids for C.R. Gibson

Last week I attended the Atlanta Gift Show to debut my new products & partnership with C.R. Gibson. Building the Jill McDonald baby & kids brand is my passion. As an artist & a mom I believe in making fun art with a touch of education that parents & kids will remember.

I am happy to announce my two new baby collections with them- "Enchanted" for girls & "A- Z Animals" a gender neutral option. Each collection includes a memory book, a photo album, grandma's brag book, a melamine set, a first year calendar, gift bag & photo frame.

In addition to the baby items I've also introduced some toddler friendly products. Chunky books, finger puppets, puzzles & Thank You cards.

The show was so much fun to attend! I was super excited to see all my products together & delighted to see the beautiful quality of each. I even got to do a signing event with my albums. (kind of a surreal moment for me :)

C.R. Gibson has done a wonderful job promoting my brand. Take a look at the video they put together featuring me in the new Brand's new day campaign.

I love making alphabet art. Over the years I've probably made over 30. (which seems to be a lot of the same subject) The thing I really enjoy about it is I'm able to find a different approach each time. Unlike some themes that are more of a creative challenge to work through. So I just keep making them. Who knew learning my abc's would have such an inspiring effect on me! Here's one from not that long ago.

Over the next couple of months I'll be hard at work making lots of new art for the Surtex & the Licensing show this spring. On the agenda fun new prints & illustrations for kids, baby & seasonal art. I feel like I'm bubbling over with ideas the challenge for me is always time. (like any mom :) So I've made a list- my action plan for how I'll get all this done. A few new (unfamiliar) things at the top: I'd like to try to create a small plush collection for the shows. Also, I'd like to try some art for adults too. I'm thinking a fun kitchen collection (art that would like great on tea towels, ceramics, so on). Hello- New Year! I'll keep you posted about my progress. Today I'm featuring the tried & true for me... cute baby art!

(late but done) Next it's on to Christmas shopping which I haven't started yet. I need a quick Holiday infusion to get me in high gear! Maybe a peppermint latte some fruitcake & caroling?

We've enjoyed a warmer than usual November. I love this delay of the winters cold air! Last Saturday I even saw a ladybug while raking leaves. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a warm Thanksgiving day. Nothing better than a big walk after I eat too much!

We had a two great features on some very nice blogs yesterday.

The first one was on trueup.net They did a feature on "What a world" my first fabric collection with P & B Textiles. The article shows a lot of pictures of the booth where the fabric collection was introduced at the Fall Quilt Market 2011.

We painted one wall in our kitchen with chalkboard paint. I think we are all enjoying it. We post or grocery list (no more loosing it). Luca loves to draw on it. His shapes are getting more complex & I like seeing what he's interested in drawing. (all those things in his little head) He never ceases to amaze me!

What A World Fabric

Hooray it's FRIDAY! Things have been moving fast around the studio. I'm hard at work with New JM crib bedding updates. My Jill McDonald Baby & Kids (stationary, albums, puzzles & more) will hit the market this January & I'm starting to work on new products for the summer launch. And on my free time I'm hard at work starting an Etsy shop.

Next week my first line of fabric What -a- World with P & B Textiles will debut at the International Quilt Market. Makes me a little tired & happy just thinking about it all. I don't want to portray the idea that all this stuff is easy. I've been hard at work for well... years now slowly making things happen. I often think that's the problem with blogs- it seems like *poof magically a designer or artist has conquered a market. But like all good things it takes hard work, putting yourself out there & specially perseverance. OK- now that that's over on to the fun stuff!

I've dreamed of having a fabric line for 5 years now. P & B textiles contacted me about a year ago & I was thrilled! My collection What -a- World keeps with my love of mixing art & touches of education. One of my fabrics is a giant world map packed full of fun facts & cultural icons, another is how to say "Hello" in over 15 languages. For another I illustrated a group of international kids. Each world kid can be cut out individually backed with another fabric & sewn together to make a doll. (This idea still makes me SO happy!-and they turned out really nicely) There is also a large panel print called "City Blocks" were in each square I explored a different city.

I hope to show more of this collection soon. For now here's a sneak peek.

I think this will be fun fabric for both parents & kids- Enjoy!

7. Like a squirrel collecting nuts. I'm busy gathering warm cozy items.

8. Soaking up any outdoor time I can get. It'll be cold soon!

Moving Day!

I've never been particularly close to too many people. I'm shy, maybe too focused on work & have never really been that social (it can be painful for me) My best friend Gigi who has lived a little bit of everywhere the last 7 years is moving 3 blocks away. This is a strange universe moment for me, but I couldn't be happier about it. She made this beautiful little box for me a couple years ago. Now that she'll be close by we are planning on a Monday craft night, Thursday evenings we'll watch our favorite shows. Sundays Antonio (who loves to cook) is planning on preparing big family style dinners. I think we're all excited. She's is the sister I never had, Antonio's chicken wing partner & Luca's Aunt Gigi. She helps me remember I am not an island. You really do need people in your life. (especially crazy, fun ones like her!)

I painted this fall piece while I watched the Emmys last night. I've noticed that lately I'm starting to get ready for the colder weather. Flannel sheets on the beds, just bought our first gallon of apple cider, taking the winter clothes out of the spare closet & picking the last zinnias in the garden. (I know it won't be long..) Cold weather is not my favorite but I decided this year I'll make an effort to prepare. What do you do to fall into autumn?

Picture Day

About a month ago Luca went back to school. Today was picture day! I love seeing all the kids spiffed up for their individual photo. Getting him ready this morning was a challenge. (he wanted to know why he needed so many layers, why don't I like wrinkles, why he had to slick his hair back, why we needed to spend so much time brushing his teeth, why we use chapstick- so many whys?!) Capturing how cute & innocent he is now is well worth the effort. Hooray for picture day! (until junior high & high school, then Picture Day becomes something embarassing)

The Almighty Paintchip

I really like paint chips. I have several large zip lock bags full of them. I use them to get a quick visual grouping of a color palette. Each trip to the hardware store I grab a handfull. Sometimes I pick colors that I'm feeling that day, other times I base my selection of the names that amuse me or seem poetic. Either way it's fun (and free) Although my son will ask "mommy are you suppose to take all those?" So what to do with all these paint chips??? I did a bit of research & came up with some surprising results. Who new you could do so much with the almighty paint chip!

I've been tired lately. We all get pulled in so many different directions. Some days I wonder what do I like... What makes me happy? Of coarse making art does & I'm lucky I get to do that. Other little things also make me tick. I love chubby little baby arms/ hands in bracelets, the smell of lilies, watching the sky turn all grey & then hearing the first few giant drops of rain. This list goes on & on. Each year that goes by I realize more & more that it's all about the little things.

I was excited when I received this month Mini Boden catalog. The cover is an assortment of all sorts of little treasures. My desks has tins & baskets full of buttons, trinkets & other odds & ends that make me happy. Before a stressful phone call, in a moment that I need a little pick me up. I'll put on a spritz of my favorite lilac perfume, I'll apply a bit of my favorite lipstick, or put a pretty button in my hand & feel it get warm. I have match books, wrappers, photos of the people I love. Little moments that brought something to me. I keep them close by- it helps. My desk is full of treasures.

Early Fall Border Floral

I look forward to each change of season. It helps rev up my creativity. So as the shadows grow bigger & the day light gets a little shorter I'm planning what will keep me busy this winter. We have several projects I'm really looking forward too. Each of which takes lots of thought & careful planning. Learning Illustrator is still at the top of my list. I'm getting better & have set aside a couple weeks to Just do it (thank you nike) I found this floral in my print achieve & quickly adjusted the color to feel early fall. Sometimes a simple exercise like this makes me happy! (hmmm- maybe I'm procrastinating)

My parents are celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary. To do so they took a much deserved trip to Hawaii. They have been a wonderful example of a healthy loving marriage for my 3 brothers & I. Over the last few weeks they've been discussing the big trip. Luca has picked up on this. He made this painting at school & had his teacher title it Hawaiin Dream. He often has his teacher write the title he has given the art on the page. Sometimes his titles are abstract other times pretty profound. I found this one profound. He told me he "paints from his heart". I couldn't say it better myself! I'm also showing my collaged squares & planes print to keep with the travel theme but Luca's art steals the show.

So I just wrapped up my next book with Barefoot. Who's in the Farmyard? This is part of the peek-a-boo hole series I've worked on with them. I unfortunatley can't show any of my spreads for that project now. But, I do have the farm fresh on my mind & I can show you this. This is a fun farm piece done a couple years ago. We've been so busy around here lately. The hard part is showing what I'm up to. So often companies don't want any info disclosed until the product hits that market. I have to say I completely understand! On another farm note I'm headed to a birthday bash this weekend. (can't wait) Our friends have twins that are turning 4! For the big occasion they are having ponies brought to their home for kids to ride. (Oh, my the things we:)

he woke up on the dark side. He can be a real grouch in the morning. (he's a little like his mom) He has become obsessed with Star Wars. Riding around town with his Darth Vader mask on. Our coffee table has been taken over with Star Wars legos & I have 1/2 a sketchbook full of doodles- all his favorite characters. (I'll post some of those soon they're pretty funny) I didn't know much about Stars Wars but I am quickly learning.

I am so excited to announce that my picture book Over in the Meadow is now available at Barefoot Books. The Barefoot team partnered with Karrot Animation in London to animate my illustrations. I teared up the first time I saw it. The combination of art & Susan Reed's beautiful music was just so perfect! I hope you enjoy it just as much as I did. The book Over in the Meadow is sold with a c-d & we encourage it to be a parent, child sing along. Creating the art for these kind of books is always a long process with lots of challenging myself to dig deeper, push my style farther, to try & create pure joy on each spread. I'm looking forward to the weekend. Tomorrow one of Luca's Montessori classmates will be turning 4. It's fun to see all the love & creativity that goes into the kids parties. I particularly enjoy the excitement everyone feels. (even the grown ups) So Saturday we'll join the little party animals for some fun in the sun. Hope you have a great weekend!

New Favorite Thing

Antonio & I did it. We traded his beloved Porsche 911 for a Chevy Volt. Like most Americans we were tired of the high price of gas and what it means to our world. With our home & studio just a block apart we don't have much of a commute. Did you know you can go 40 miles in the Volt without using any gas? Did you know it doesn't emit any exhaust emissions into the air? These things make me H A P P Y! One more great point for me is it's super quiet. (Ahhh- quiet any mom understands that one) Antonio loves that it's loaded with gadgets & corresponding iphone apps. Don't get me wrong I know we're not saving the world but every little step helps. So the Chevy Volt goes on my list of favorite things!

Or at least that's kind of how it feels. For the first time in 7 years I will not be exhibiting at Surtex. This is the big yearly show for illustrators/ designers. I have to say I'll miss not being there. This was a conscious decision on my part. I've been focusing on the Jill McDonald Baby brand. We're working hard to expand the JM product offerings to playette (clothing), bath & juvenile bedding. On another front I'm hard at work on my own line of wall art. So realizing you can't do everything. (but sigh... wouldn't that be GREAT!) I've had to pick & choose were I want to focus my energy. If your a company that follows my blog & miss seeing my art at Surtex this year. Send me an e-mail & I'll see what I can do. I have lots of fun prints still available. Guess I won't be prom queen this year. (I never was but a girl can dream, right?)

Spreading the Word

Antonio has just added some really nice photos of the JM crib bedding to our website. I'm working hard to expand the brand with a playette and bath offering. We're in the PR stage now which I'm learning all about. Feels a bit strange bragging about the product but I really have put my heart & soul into making it special. I've never been to London but after the last couple days it's now on the top of my list of places I'd like to go. I'm not a big city girl. I've lived in Manhattan twice & each time leave knowing I need nature around me. So when I think of were I'd like to vacation a city doesn't usually make my list.

I have to say I'm intrigued by London (so much history) & would love to see more. I found a piece in my sketch book I painted about 5 years ago. I guess this city has always been somewhere in my mind. If you live their or have visited what do you like about it? I'm curious.

I have to admit I'm smitten with the upcoming royal wedding. Yes, I'll be up at the crack of dawn tuned in tissue in hand. I wish I was in London to see pageantry a bit more up close & I guess kind of personal? (among millions) I haven't completely lost my mind though. I do realize that people are just people & the stress these two must be under is immense. For me it's just about a temporary break from the ordinary & seeing some pretty amazing hats! My son wakes every morning at 5:45 I've talked him into watching it with me. I've already planned our breakfast Friday morning tea & blueberry scones. So I'll never be a princess but I do look forward to being the tooth fairy some day. Close enough for me!

Easter Egg Wraps

Today I wanted to post something you could print at home & use if you like. I made these a few years ago & they looked cute wrapped around an egg. Just download & print, very patiently cut each out (sorry about that part) tape & voila it's done.

Day 3- Easter

This is an older piece I sold a few years ago. I painted it on a bright turquoise piece of canson paper. I had to separate the painted area from the background. (like we always do around here)

I just remember this one being a particular challenge because there were so many little bits & texture. This print ended up on a popcorn canister full of pastel Easter sweets.
