Toning it down.

Not my usual rainbow of color.  Starting a new project that will need
a different approach.  These were some quick studies.
I actually enjoyed painting with less color. (surprised me)
Ready to try some more!

My favorite part of summer?

Painting OUTSIDE!  Dries quicker, with a chance of hearing a bird song, or bee buzz by.
Plus, a little dose of vitamin D!

Calling this one Summer House.

It's On...

The forecast says hot, hot, hot all week.  Which inspired this camel caravan art.
I think I might be the rare exception- I actually really enjoy these bright, blazing days.
(Although I do need some shady spots for a little relief & a fountain is nice too!)

I think if you bite into a rainbow it would probably taste like watermelon.
Just saying.

Eat fresh.

This is an image I illustrated for Who's in the Garden? a book I did
for Barefoot Books years ago.  It still makes me happy.
I'm smitten with summertime.  The bright sun, the long days, the colorful flowers
and the gardens.  Full of surprises, flavors & possibilities.
Awww, summer!

Surtex, done & dusted!

Me in my booth

A few of my buttons, I ended up designing 12 for a fun assortment to choose from.

A floral print giveaway for special clients.
Sometimes the booth got busy & I totally forgot about this.

Whew, I won't lie the amount of work that goes into preparing for Surtex is immense.  From updating your collection, being your own art director & editor, sending out some promotion, making banners, updating business cards, creating fun little branded giveaways & getting all that to New York-it's A LOT.  All that said it's always a great feeling of accomplishment once it's done & you're standing behind the booth.

I had a good show.  It's always important to me to stand behind my work & see what the response is like.  People will let you know what's working & what's not. (not always verbally, you can tell by body language or a look)  That keeps my eyes open & evolving which is essential as an artist.
Knowing and understanding your market is important.

I'm always blown away by how many super talented people there are in the industry and how kind and supportive most of them are.  We're all putting our hearts, dreams & days behind what we do.
And while it's not always easy it's a beautiful way to walk through life. (doing what you love)

Surtex 2017

This time next week I'll be in New York camped out in Surtex booth 3029.  Hopefully showing my work to many!  I'm thinking of my space there as my own little greenhouse overflowing with art.
Should be fun, I've have lots of new work to share from my standard kids & baby art to prints appropriate for any age.  Hope to see you there!

Mommas & Babies

A very special bond.  Even if they refuse to pose normally for a picture!
Happy Mother's Day!

Thursday, May 11, 2017

Late spring, early summer is my favorite time of year.  It's also one of my busiest.
Trying to take time to refresh, enjoy the sun, the flowers & YES the drinks!
(*I'll take that pink tropical one please)

Animal Squares

I love animals.  Big, small, feathered or covered in fur I'm a fan.
Fierce or docile they find a way into my heart!
They're so uncomplicated. (I appreciate that)

Coral Skies

We've had a particularly grey April here.  Days of overcast, dull skies.  I've been daydreaming about a different colored sky.  Coral, perhaps!

Vivid Easter

Wishing you a very Happy Easter if this is a holiday you celebrate!
This image is inspired by the Lite-Brite toy I dearly loved as a child.  I'd make a glowing image every night before bed.  The vivid contrast was my favorite part.

*The lapsed Catholic in me can't stop painting bunnies this time of year.

We recently took a long awaited family vacation, YAY!  It's been a while.
I painted what I packed. (couldn't wait to be under the sun for a couple days)
*Going away, changing the pace & coming back works wonders!

Sunday, March 19, 2017

I take a little time every Sunday to do a quick study in my sketchbook.  Something different than my norm & give myself some time for unstructured play.  Here's todays entry.

*P.S. This doesn't mean I'm not drawing/ making the other days it's just more structured & project based.  Sunday is reserved just for me!

Here's a look at the strike offs of my Seaside collection for Windham Fabric.
(out April 2017)
I'm excited to make some tiny sundresses for my nieces out of the whale watching print.

Land locked in Kansas City, MO. this collection was inspired by yearning for the water.
Messages in a bottle, anchors away & patterned lighthouses all in a palette of blues
that beckons the sea.  Do you feel the breeze? (me too!)

Spring Fever...

Every year when the tips of those bright yellow daffodils
begin to bloom I get serious case of spring fever.
Alas, it's begun!

Hello, World! board books

I'm excited to share that the next two books in the Hello, World! series that I'm writing & illustrating for Random House Kids is now out.
Birds & Backyard Bugs are board books for toddlers that give a colorful, basic but fun introduction to each topic.

The Hello, World! series was developed by myself & my wonderful editor as a way to share simple concepts about nature & science.  Watching the series grow has been so rewarding! Two new books will be out spring 2018. (Dinosaurs & My Body)

It is my hope that these books bring families & young readers the same happiness they've provided me with.
Happy Reading!

Me signing some copies of the Hello, World! series at Barnes & Noble.
