Pink puffballs

This is the mimosa tree in my front yard.
I look forward to its pink feathery blooms each summer.
We bought the lot we live on 7 years ago & built our home 5 years ago.
The Mimosa tree was a sign to me that this was our place
to call home.  I always wanted a Mimosa tree.
(which I just found out is also called a Pink Persian Silk tree)

Extra bonus... it smells great & attracts hummingbirds.
Can you see one making a surprise appearance in the photo?
I was overjoyed.  I'm more easily entertained now!

I love wandering around collecting blooms.

Happy place

It's Monday... again.
Hope you make some time for your "happy place"
this week.  Whatever that may be.?.
For me it's art.
I'm lucky it also pays the bills!

As I get older I'm learning to lean into what makes me
happy more & try to not dwell on the rest.
(I won't lie this is hard!)
I tend to be a perfectionist so, I want to get
everything right which is impossible not to
mention ridiculous.

Pinching myself!

I hit an exciting milestone with my Hello, World! early learning book series–
ONE MILLION books SOLD! I wanted to share a heartfelt thanks to everyone who has
enjoyed the books & sent me kind messages (featuring your cute, curious kiddos).

A special thanks goes to the team at Random House Kids / Double Day Books who has been a
delight to work with. Espicially my editor, whose keen eye & generous spirit has helped make
this series even stronger! You never do this kind of things completely on your own.
So... THANK YOU for making space on your shelves & in this busy world for my books!

Puzzled characters

To great adventures.... once the world is safer to navigate!
(Who knows when that will be?)

I've always liked making art for the baby/ toddler age range.
Lately, I've been thinking about that extra layer of stress Covid-19
has added for a pregnant or new mom. (or dad)

I don't have any big revelations about this thought but, I
do think it lights a fire under that care and mindfulness
parenting requires. (with no training wheels)

Feels like we're all living in a bit of an unruly experiment now.

I've been thinking about the importance of being resilient.

Dad Swag

Celebrating Dads! (a day late... I know)
It's a wonderfully big role to help raise the future.
So many little moments of love.
Preparing a piece of you but, uniquely their own
 to contribute to our world.

The weekend is calling!

A painted escape in my sketchbook.
Feels like this summer is much more about taking
action than soaking up the sun.
That said.... I hope you make time for a little bit of both.

Stay open

Ready for change and excited to vote!

Committed to continue listening, learning & being active in ways I can help.
The last couple years have been a be a better human check point.
Coming to a head the last several weeks.

From taking health seriously, to the climate crisis, to a real hard look at how we
treat minorities and people of color. (for centuries)
And don't forget the abuse of animals.

It's time to do better all the way around!
I know we can-  t o g e t h e r.

Hello, June

Rolling into a new month!
I always look forward to summertime.

Did you know June is PRIDE month?  With so many communities being marginalized
& discriminated against it's important to remember...
You're not being oppressed when another group gains rights that you've always had.

Hope your summer is off to a good start!
*P.S. I miss rollerskating– it was one of my favorite things to do as a kid.

Enough!

Seems cliche to post this without saying more.
Isn't it time that we want more for our future than this continued
injustice?

If you're caucasian (like me) here's some things we can do:

  1. Learn about other people and their culture but go beyond foods and festivals.
  2. Explore the unfamiliar. Put yourself in situations where you are in the visible minority.
  3. Be a proactive parent. Talk to your children candidly about race.
  4. Don't tell or laugh at stereotypical jokes.
  5. Think before you speak. Words can hurt whether you mean them to or not.
  6. Be a role model and help educate others regarding your own experiences.
  7. Don't make assumptions because they are usually wrong and stereotypes are destructive.
  8. Consider how race and racism impact your life and those around you.
  9. Don't let others get away with biased language or behavior- speak up and out.
  10. Take a position against hate and take a Stand Against Racism.

This list was written by Margaret Mitchell, President and CEO of
YWCA eliminating racism empowering women in Cleveland, Ohio.

Something a little lighter...

Summer  B I K E S !

My 12 year old has never expressed interest in learning how to ride a bike.
His grandpa has fond memories of bike riding as a child so he bought
him one that just sat unused in the garage. (for years)

Last fall his school had a program to teach kids how to ride a bike
& he enjoyed it.  His dad loves ride & I just like the feeling of
the wind in my hair!

We live in downtown Kansas City & although it's not bustling with constant activity
it's still not an ideal location for a novice rider.
There's a private airport for small planes nearby that has
a flat circular drive that I'm thinking will be perfect
for us.

I'm looking for things we can do this summer to make it
feel a little more normal & maybe even like summer.
So far my plan was just a lot of popsicles so the list is slowly
growing!

*I think I should of added band-aids to the above art.
My son is really clumsy so, I know that will part of the bike rides.
I'm happy he doesn't let that stop him!

Fiesta Fabric Collection

I have a new fabric collection with Windham Fabrics called FIESTA.

When they selected this theme over a year ago no one knew how ominous it might feel today.
Seems like death has been brought front & center lately.
I've felt an ongoing sense of mourning and an awakened sense that this one life
we get is precious.
None of this is what the collection is about.  It is designed to be fun, vibrant  & playful
with a nod to Day of the Dead.
(but, when you make something it's hard not to reflect on the space you're in today)

I hope this collection inspires you to make something that stirs your spirit
& lifts you up.  *Happy sewing & please consider making a mask for you & your loved ones.

We remember

Painted with gouache in my sketchbook.  Between Memorial Day & the rising death toll due to Covid -19 my heart is feeling heavy.  It seems easier to look away but, memories hold on tight & root deep in the heart. (and maybe that's what it means to be alive?)

WEATHER

Every Friday for the past 4 weeks I've been on the Chick-fil-A Facebook
page for story time.  Each week I've read one of my Hello, World!
books. I've paired each week's reading with a coloring page that corresponds with the book.
This week was WEATHER.
(Incase you were wondering my favorite weather is sunny & warm!)

Chick-fil-A has been offering scaled down versions of some of my
books as part of their kids meal.  It's been a great way to get my books
into even more little hands.

Here's all the coloring pages we've made so far.
(I say we because my husband Antonio spend a good chunk of time
tracing my art in Photoshop to lovingly make each page.)

You can download these pages by following the link in my
Instagram header. Each page is 8 x 10" so a standard printer does the trick.

Add a little color & voila!
Coloring is a great indoor activity & I hope you ENJOY.
*Remember coloring outside the lines is just fine!
Sometimes even better  :)

clicking here  to set up a time for a virtual viewing.
(with simple directions online for scheduling)

There's lots of great artists & studios participating so,
if you're looking for art please take a look.

THANKS!

Showers to Flowers

Swirling winds & showers– there's only a few day of April left.
Somehow this month has gone fast & slow all at the same time.
It feels a little like being stuck in a dark cloud while we all wait
for a  r a i n b o w.

Fun anyone?

Have you done anything fun lately?
Despite the challenging times I'm trying to find

Earth Day

How did you celebrate Earth day?  Yesterday I posted a cover reveal of my next Hello, World!
book Planet Earth on Instagram but,  I forgot to do it here too!  Yikes, I don't want to neglect mother Earth so here I go.... I was excited to write & illustrate this book & share some of what makes the world wonderful to me (and I'm sure many others)  Special places like oceans, savannas, mountains, deserts and forests waiting for us to discover & enjoy!  Also included a few kid friendly maps & and a discussion point for kiddos about how their family helps keep Earth clean.
It's a pretty amazing planet we get to call home.

Spring Bug Scene

Although life is definitely feeling different I'm finding some solace in
noticing things that are still the same this time of year like...
bugs & blooms.
Keep your eyes open– there's still comfort to be discovered.
