I'd love a pet goose for Christmas!
Every Saturday (during the cold months) we feed the birds. I think of it as a Saturday brunch for our feathered friends! The feeder swings round and round becoming a carousel full of happy, hungry birds.
To enter visit my Instagram page. I’ll pick a winner at random October 28th. Rock on!
Stefanie Hohl is an author, educator, and speaker who asked me to write a guest blog post about my process of writing board books. (Honestly and invitation I never expected to receive!) If you’d like to learn more about my approach to writing you can do so here.
Last year I got to learn about rocks & minerals for an upcoming Hello, World! book. Over the summer I visited my brother in Boston & he took me to the Harvard Mineralogical & Geological Museum which was spectacular! Rows of beautiful rocks, minerals ores, and gems, in different shapes & sizes. The even have a collection of meteorites. (Space rocks that are hurled to Earth from space!) I never thought much about rocks or minerals but, they really are interesting & much more complex than you think at first glance.
If you don’t have a fancy museum nearby head outside, varied rocks are often found by lakes, rivers, creeks, ponds, or streams. Another great place to look for rocks is on a hike!
*If you’re just starting to collect rocks you can cheaply & easily separate & store them in an egg carton.
Treasures are fun to find!
Can you tell I'm feeling melancholy today?
Do you have a favorite kind of apple? (I like pink lady apples which are tart & sweet!)
Since my son was a toddler we’ve visited the same orchard– Weston Red Barn every September. We went on an overcast Saturday this year which gave the place a moody feel & and made the red apples really pop! There’s also an assortment of animals to admire & feed. This is a little sampling of what we saw.
Do you have a special fall tradition?
Happy first day of fall! I enjoy the overgrown look my flowers end up with at the end of each September. Tasseled, wild and vibrant seeming to welcome a respite from the high summer sun. I particularly love it when the monarch stop by usually in the late afternoon.
Time to let out a ROAR! This is the cover reveal for Hello, World! Kids’ Guides Exploring Dinosaurs picture book – available early next year. The Kids’ Guides books (ages 3-7) are packed with aged up non fiction facts & are the ideal next step for Hello, World board book fans. Dinosaurs roamed Earth millions of years ago yet scientist are still discovering new species today! Dinosaurs continue to deliver in the delight & surprise department. There’s some fan favorites in this book as well as some new dinosaurs to meet.
I’ve also included a reveal of the back of book with more details. If you’re interested in pre-ordering you can do it here.
I wanted to make a less traditional back to school print. (that didn’t include a yellow bus) This got me thinking about how school is a universal “engine” that connects us all! As we chug into the new school year I hope it feels back on track with kids ready to learn & teachers feeling supported & inspired. Good teachers are so important they have the opportunity to change lives!
She had a front row seat to history like no other & was a constant presence that will be missed by most!
(Not all... because as an adult you know you can't make everyone happy:)
- The flowers follow the sun which makes them look like they're in conversation with one another.
- The leaves are larger than I remember & each has a jagged edge as if it was cut out with pinking shears. (which makes them a little prickly when you brush by)
-The yellow color seems to slightly shift from year to year. This time the color felt a bit more red/ yellow and golden. (Maybe it has something to do with the sky that day?)
- I also noticed more bees than ever busily buzzing from flower to flower. This made me happy as I know bees have been threatened by harmful pesticides & climate change. We need bees they're one of Earth's best pollinators!
My final observation was that despite seeing this for years it still a complete delight for the eyes & spirit!
