Amazon's Best Of The Year So Far!

I recently received some good news!

My book Garden Time, part of the Hello, World series was chosen as one of Amazon's Best of the Year So Far for 2022 in the baby to age two category.  I'm in good company and here are the rest of the books that have been chosen.

As always I want to share what a joy it is for me to work on the Hello, World! early learning series.  It's  a delight to learn alongside your little ones.  Our world is full of fascinating things to explore and I'm lucky to be somewhat of a tour guide and an enthusiast in keeping your eyes open and learning more about what's happening all around us.  You never know how it will spark your curiosity!

Towards the weekend!

Hope you had a good week!  Being a freelance artist for almost 20 years the days of the week tend to meld together.   I often find myself working on the weekends. (at least one day) and at the beginning of my career had to to survive.

Nonetheless, I still like to take a moment to acknowledge the end of the "traditional" work week if for no other reason than to feel a little more normal & celebrate the work we put in to whatever it is we do to support ourselves & our families. (and for some of the lucky ones- like me... share their talents)

The Great Outdoors

Over the long weekend we spent a couple days in Denver.  We went to the botanical garden, did some hiking, climbed some rocks and saw my youngest brother. (I have three!)  It was just what I need... fresh air, lots of trees, a burst of green and a big dose of Mother Nature.

Once again

We all have our opinion and I’m going to share mine.  I’m so sick and angry with the repeated incidents of GUN VIOLENCE in the U.S.  We don’t need thoughts and prayers we need action through gun safety legislation.  The senseless killing of innocent people on such a regular basis (this time 19 children at school and two teachers) is something we can’t close our eyes to or begin to find normal… it’s not!  (and never will be)  I refuse to believe we have to settle for this.

Rollin' into the weekend!

Hope you enjoy your day.  This morning we picked the blush pink peonies in our garden & I can't think of a better way to begin the day!

Bringing the outdoors in always makes me happy.

Summery Blues

What does the color of blue make you think of?  Blueberries, waves, a robin's egg, sapphires, the planet Neptune.  You typically don't see many blue flowers but, there are a few: azure aster, bluebell, chicory, and forget-me- nots are the first few that come to my mind.

Taking some time to remember the 1 million people who have died from Covid-19.  I know we all want to turn the page but, for so many there is a special person missing.  A grandparent, a father, a mother, a sister, a best friend…. There’s no making sense of how some things end or the contrast of what each person has gone through.  However I find there is a a beauty and necessity in remembering the good moments and the special people who come in and out of our lives.  I don’t think you need to have experienced this loss first hand to acknowledge this has been a significant historical event and an emotional one for so many who weren’t ready to say goodbye.  You're not alone.

Flowers for Friday

This is an older mixed media floral piece I made.  It captures how I'm feeling lately.  Grateful for the springtime flowers that bring me lots of joy.

This is the lilac bush in my backyard.  You can smell it about a block away!  I think the smell of lilacs is my very favorite flower fragrance.

I've been picking myself a big bouquet daily.  One for each room!  Hope you're enjoying the smells, sights and feeling of spring.

Earth Day

What a beautiful planet we get to call home.  Round like a swirled blue marble or shown flat on a map there’s so much to see, appreciate, protect and preserve.  The first Earth day was celebrated in 1970.

The Earth is what we all have in common.  –Wendell Berry
Let’s take care of it today so it’s here for us Earthlings tomorrow.

Things you can do to help:
– Plant a tree!  (Trees keep the air we breath healthy.)
– Turn off lights you’re not using.
– Try taking a shorter shower or lessen the amount of water you use brushing your teeth.
– Volunteer to pick up trash in a park.
– When making a take out order ask them to skip the plastic utensils, napkins, and straws.

– Eat less meat.
– Take time to appreciate the beauty of nature.  You’re less likely to mistreat something you appreciate.

Fluorescent fun

This one turned out bright!  Like a double shot of espresso for your eyes. 🕶

I love bright colors & animals so this one made me particularly happy!

Today is my husband’s birthday and this time it happens to fall on Easter!  I wondered how many times this happened before so I looked it up… And the answer is just 5 times since 1873 (in 1881, 1892,1927, 1938, and 1960)  Which seems pretty special– just like him!  Happy Easter to those who celebrate & Happy Birthday to my sweet Antonio.

🥕 Don't forget to mix in a few carrots.  Eating too much candy can give you a tummy ache.  (Advice I gave my teen son this morning.)

Bunny, bunny, chick

I knew I was seeing Easter candy pop up in stores but, I just realized it's this Sunday!  Which is also my husbands birthday.  Which I did know about! :)

This is a painted piece from last year that I made in my mini sketchbook.

Spring has sprung where I live!  I'm delighted to feel the sun on my skin, a warmer breeze in the air and all the different color blooms arriving each day.  This painted floral art was painted in my sketchbook.  Below you can see how I took it from sketchbook to repeat.

Hope you're starting to see signs of spring where you live too!

Did you know?...

Did you know...Horses can doze off while standing but only dream when they lay down to sleep. Unlike humans they only need 2 to 3 hours of deep sleep a night.

And I bet they rest best in a dewy field of spring flowers.

Breezy and bright

Something happy to usher us into the new week!  Have the trees started to flower where you live?

This is the top of the cherry tree outside my window.

Friday Feelings

I made an emotional barometer.  I've been a ball of nerves lately.  (Anyone else?)  My dad/ who I'm close with had a big surgery yesterday– the second in under three months.  Thankfully he's doing well!  We made the decision to change my son's school next year and after many months of waiting finally found out he's accepted. (GIANT relief!) Last but not least I wrapped up a huge book project that still has me feeling woozy.  It was intense but, a great opportunity and kept me up to my ears in research, writing, drawing and painting morning, noon and night! (did I mention weekends too)

The war in Ukraine and the news of the ice shelf breaking off in Antarctica add to the mounting anxiety. Sigh, I'm going to try to channel the first doodle I painted & chill for a bit!  Note inner tube (to hold me up) and glass of wine. (Malbec, my faovirte red)

P.S.  I don't "chill" easily.  Holding still is hard for me!  #GOALS

Hope you take the time to pinpoint how you're feeling (the world is moving fast) and do what you need to preserve or improve your sense of well being.  It's important!

Spring pastels

I love seeing the pastel pops of color starting to appear!

So many pretty surprise up in the branches and sprouting from the ground.

Hope, warmth, sun, sigh...

A handful of sunshine to carry close to your heart this week.  Seeing all the effects and visuals of war is heartbreaking.  I can only imagine what it must be like to be living in it.  Trying to do what I can in my everyday life to counter balance the darkness.

Something Springy

A mixed media bird piece inspired by the robins I see hoping around my yard in the early morning.

A hopeful sign of spring for sure!

Spring forward

Great news–the sun called and she has agreed to stick around a little longer each day! 🌞

Planes and other Flying Machines

Last week a new Hello, World! title flew onto the shelves.  Planes and other Flying Machines is an exploration of different devices you’ll find in the sky.  From hot air balloons, sea planes, hang gliders, drones to rockets– there’s a lot of flying machines.  It’s my hope that this book inspires budding travelers and engineers.  Did you know the Wright brothers designed a wooden plane they successfully flew on December 17, 1903? (Making them first in flight!)

Winter pattern making

Did you know Sunday March 20 is officially the last day of winter?  Which means we're nearly there!  I made this pattern in one of my mini sketchbooks.  Sometimes when I unwind at night I'll make a pattern or small unplanned illustration as a way to let my mind wander & it's usually based off the season or something on my mind.  This one was made with Copic markers and pen.

You're my cup of tea!

Just thought you should know.  Happy Valentine's Day!

Tuesday, February 1, 2022

Hello, February!  This month makes me think of LOVE.  Guess I bought into the whole Valentine's day thing.  You get a hug, you get a hug, you get a hug!

I'm shy and not much of a physical hugger but, deep down I like to think my art feels like a warm, happy hug.  (which may be the next best thing)
